Week 4!

Really amazing things are happening in room 108!  As part of our recycling unit we read the book One Plastic Bag by Miranda Paul.  The students were so impressed with Isatou Ceesay's innovative way of reusing plastic bags in Gambia, they wanted to follow suit!  First students worked together to cut old plastic bags into strips.  Now we're using those strips to weave a class tapestry!

Our readers workshop routine is really starting to take shape!  Students practiced proper partner reading, and have begun completing text-to-self connection sheets for each independent reading book they read.

Mrs. Wolinsky  introduced more of the Seesaw app to us.  This week students practiced taking photos of WOW! work with their ipads to put into their digital learning journal.  On Friday they started recording their voices over the pictures to explain their thinking or show their reading progress!  Here's an example of a student's WOW! work:

Week 3!

We've been learning about recycling and composting!  On Monday Erik Street visited Rowe.  He talked about all the ways Yarmouth recycles and helps keep our planet healthy.

On Tuesday we harvested the carrots from our new raised beds on the playground.  We then weighed them,  recorded the data,  scientifically drew the carrots, and finally delivered them to our cafeteria's salad bar!

In math we've been exploring math tools, practicing making and counting tallies, and telling number stories.

Our independent reading stamina continues to grow!

After a week of practicing oral storytelling and story illustration, we've jumped into small moment story writing this week!

Mrs. Wolinksy introduced the Seesaw app to students on Friday.  Students will use this as a learning 'journal', documenting work they are proud of and sharing their learnings.  Today they used an interactive map to guide them in the practice of signing in, taking a photo, and posting it to their journal.

Have a wonderful fall weekend, everyone!

Week 2!

This week we continued to establish a sense of community in our classroom and become familiar with daily routines.

Students thoughtfully chose a breathing buddy to aid them in mindfulness activities this year.
Self portraits are finished and hanging in the hallway for all to enjoy!
We worked on our classroom rules all week: First brainstorming, then narrowing them down to the top 5,  followed by rewording them in positive language, and finally illustrating them.

We've continued to work on our independent reading stamina this week.  As you can see, significant progress has been made!
The students voted.  Our class name is... The Ice Owls!  Here is our class quilt hanging by our door.
On Friday Mrs. Wolinsky introduced the basics of using ipads in the classroom.  She will be a regular in our room, teaching us thoughtful ways to utilize these wonderful tools.
Friday is our library day.  Students picked out books this week!  Please help your child remember to bring back all library books each Friday so they can pick out new literary treasures to take home!

Week 1!

We've had a wonderful and very busy week in first grade!  Here are a few snaps from our first days together:

Students worked together to create a set of rules for our meeting space.

We've been building our independent reading stamina and getting familiar with the classroom library.

The making of our self portraits is underway!  The finished products will be hanging in the hallway very soon!

Students wrote  and illustrated a hope or dream they have for first grade.

Check back next week for more updates from room 108!
